Description

Historical images are excellent material for public engagement and marketing campaigns, particularly on social media. The fastest growing platforms -- Instagram, Snapchat and Tiktok – all rely on visual communication to deliver the message. At the Galt Museum & Archives we’ve been capitalizing on this potential for a decade using Facebook. With clear and quantified goals, we tracked targets with regard to community engagement, promotion of services, generation of requests and donations from 2015 to 2020. After five years of social media curation, the Galt boasts a demonstrated success in all three areas of engagement coupled with a considerable growth of the subscribed audience. Most of the content was built around historical photographs and videos supplied by the Galt Archives. The subjects included prominent landmarks, such as the iconic CPR Bridge, sports celebrities, vintage street scenes, off-beat commercials and local television programs. These opportunities should not be limited to heritage institutions. The success can be replicated by public and private corporation using their own legacy records or materials from local museums. The presenter shares best practices on locating and utilizing the audio-visual treasures online for the benefit of your organization.
